Drawing a Line

When these newlyweds reached out to Bianca and Kyle Thompson of Oak and Iron Photography, they knew they wanted a slightly atypical approach to their big day’s coverage.

“We went super candid-heavy on their portrait time, which was perfect for their laid-back vibes,” the Thompsons say. “We did, however, make jokes about taking some sick band photos, so it was no better time than this to bust out an idea we had for a while now.”

The photographers had frequently passed a wall in the historic Cocoa Village in Florida with a prominent black line running along the top. They wondered what it would be like to shoot a double exposure, using the line as a “censorship” feature with a person’s face. For this couple, who are two tattoo artists that work together, the Thompsons thought this experiment would be perfect.

“We kept it pretty simple because we wanted the final image to look a little wonky, so we turned our ISO to 200 and our shutter to 1/4000th of a second to make sure there wasn’t too much blur in case they moved during between the two shots,” they explain. “Not only do we love how it turned out, but Sadie said it’s one of her favorite photos of all time, which means the world to us coming from such a talented artist.”
