Double Exposure Gives Layers to Photographer’s Narrative Concept

Double exposures can be such an interesting narrative element in photography. We’ve seen wedding photographers using double exposures in subtler ways to add lighting effects as well as in bolder ways, playing creatively with couples together, couples layered separately and individually using other environmental elements. More recently, portrait photographer Jyo Bhamidipati used a double exposure to express her experience in quarantine during the pandemic using only window light (and explains how she shot it, along with other ambient light setups).

Wedding, portrait and family photographer Jazreel Hong of Justrealle Photography, based in Singapore, is a fan of film-inspired photos and, luckily enough, found a couple that shared that love. “I thought, what better opportunity would I get to explore double exposure shots?” Hong says. “I came up with the idea of using their hands to ‘cover’ their eyes and completed the effect with an in-camera function.”
