Curiosity Meets Patience

As the saying goes, patience is a virtue—and that’s certainly the case for photographer Dan McCourt, who waited like a fly on the wall for all of the elements of this frame to come together. The couple’s wedding had just ended at this venue—the Wylam Brewery at Palace of Arts Exhibition Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England—when the guests were being moved to the reception area. Separating the reception area from the ceremony room were large industrial doors framed by steel bookcases and exposed brickwork.

McCourt noticed the little girl walking to the doors and knew he wanted to capture this moment, even though a slew of distractions kept busying up the frame: people walking by, other children trying to help, etc. “I just waited,” McCourt says. “I knelt down, got my composition and just waited.” Once the little girl was alone and reached up for the door handle, McCourt snapped the shutter. “I love the serenity and simplicity of the frame in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the busy wedding reception.”
