Creative Storytelling While Homebound

April 8, 2020

By Jacqueline Tobin

When photographer Eric Kelley first began documenting weddings backing 2004, he says here was huge push toward photojournalism. “Then with the re-emergence of film, we saw a movement back to a more fine-art look,” he explains. The images we (my wife Lora and I) have taken during this season have been a blend of both looks. Most of what we are documenting is our everyday life, especially while staying safe and isolating at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.” It’s been, he says, an interesting way to create storytelling narratives with depth and layers.

Weddings jobs are pretty much cancelled or postponed for now, so while at home, Eric and Lora (who has a blog called Storied Living where you can find many of the images from this project, documented by the numbered days of their isolation) have had a lot of fun “shooting off the hip, looking for the emotion and not necessarily trying to make the content look lifestyle, magazine-worthy or curated [as they would with hired jobs]. Given where we are in world history, it felt disingenuous to do anything but just capture us as we are.”

And to help tell the story of who they and their three children— Henry, Della and Bette—are as a family, they used the Fuji XT3 and Fuji GFX 50R, which Fuji graciously gave him to experiment with.

“They provide a dreamy creamy and authentic look to all of the images,” says Eric. “I use presets to edit them and give them a bit more of a film look. I like how clear and crisp the images are while still having a softness to them that feels other-worldly, [like the image of Lora, shown here from Day 3 of being at home, feeding the most recent addition to the Kelley family]. We’re using a combination of 60mm and 110mm, as well as the Contax 80mm and 35mm, lenses.”

Day 3 in isolation for Lora and Eric Kelley was used to create a narrative for their story.
