For children’s fashion photographer Tekla Szőcs of Bear and Pine Photography, there’s something special about this photo of 9-year-old dancer and model Lily, captured in a suburb of London. “Lily looks free and easy as if she was just enjoying a quiet moment on a Mediterranean vacation, while in fact, she’s balancing on a narrow ledge 2 feet above the ground, recovering from a dance-related injury and not bothered by the ants and giant spiders that live under the leaves,” the photographer says.

The shoot was commissioned by Lily’s mother with the goal of updating Lily’s portfolio. Szőcs was in charge of the styling and posing, and capturing such a photograph, she says, underscores her admiration for this genre of photography. “This year I have met some incredible child models, and we’ve done shoots in icy winds in the winter, and then at insanely busy public locations. These kids have all my respect.”
