An Iconic Backdrop

For this image, taken in July at Moraine Lake, in Alberta, Canada, photographers Jim and Nikki focused on how “the Valley of the Ten Peaks [in Banff National Park] surrounded the lake and caught the alpenglow during sunrise.”

Adds Jim: “Since it was mid-summer, it required us convincing the couple, from Texas, to wake up at 4 in the morning for us to make it in time. And even though we arrived super early, we still had to deal with dozens of tourists flocking the iconic location.”

The couple, adds Jim, just had “to place their faith in us to get the timing right and do our research for the ideal weather (in order to get those colors in the mountains). We have, over the years, spent a lot of time to learn about natural light, the different types of lighting situations, and how to help couples be comfortable in front of the camera. They didn’t need to hike up to the spot, just climb up and down some rocks and boulders so that we could crop out tourists.”
