A Switch on Glitch

Photographer LeeAnn B Stephan says some might find this photo to be “pretty strange,” but, she admits, “I’m actually in love with the results.” And she has every photographer’s worst nightmare to thank for it.

“A couple of years ago, an old hard drive crashed and a lot of the files on that hard drive were corrupted,” Stephan explains. “I managed to save most of them, but a few files were still pretty bad off.”

Looking back through those files recently, she came to see them anew. “It reminded me of a film photo and how big light leaks can occur, especially on the first image of the roll. I guess it spoke to my love of the editing process. There are so many things you can be taken with and moved by while editing. I’ll sometimes edit sessions from years past just because my edit is constantly evolving and improving. It’s a way for me to become excited about those images again.”

(Shot on a Nikon D750 and NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 lens at f/18, .5 seconds and ISO 100, in the back of a Whole Foods at sunset.)
