A Smile From the Heavens

Since a grandparent passed away last March, London wedding photographer Natalie J Watts has been seeing rainbows every day, “particularly during sad moments,” she says.

For instance, last October, when she was shooting Crystal and Matthew’s wedding at Coombe Hill Golf Club, in Kingston upon Thames, she dropped and broke her favorite lens, the Canon 50mm f/1.2. “I was feeling sad about it during the wedding breakfast meal, when I looked out of the window to see a rainbow,” Watts says. “I jumped up and asked Crystal and Matthew if they could come outside with me for a couple of minutes. Crystal had just changed into her red and gold Chinese wedding dress.”

By the time they reached a clearing to shoot a portrait, the single rainbow turned into a double-rainbow (notice the subtle second one above the brilliant first one, below), “though luckily it was barely raining where we stood,” Watts notes. “A couple of moments after I had captured this image for my couple, a cloud passed over the sun and the rainbow faded. A very lucky moment, and I feel very lucky to have such an adventurous couple willing to leave their wedding meal and trust my vision as a photographer!”

(Shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and 24-70mm II lens at 28mm, f/3.5, 1/1000th of a second and ISO 125.)
