Throughout the month of November, our Photo of the Day series will be taken over by each of Rangefinder‘s newly minted 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography in 2019. The 30 honorees are featured in our November issue, and each of their full, 30-photo submissions, reviewed by the competition judges, can be found in our online gallery. For more behind-the-scenes insights, follow us on Instagram.

Urška and Domen say they have a simple and relaxed style that is “pure, authentic and warm. Our main goal during the wedding is to capture the day as it unfolds, photographing real and honest moments, big and small ones, that mean the most to our couples.”

These moments include quick glances between newlyweds, tears of joy and tight hugs shared with friends and family. The photographers—who are based in Celje, Slovenia—say that they prefer a touching and emotional moment over a technically perfect one. “We love to add a few softer focused images to the final galleries, because they have that je ne sais quoi touch that fits perfectly.”

Below are their behind-the-scenes insights on three of the photos from their submission this year.

When we arrived to this location, we were in awe. It was a stunning old château in France and it’s still one of our favorite weddings we ever photographed, the one that changed our perspective on the true documentary approach to wedding days. After we photographed the dress in another room and gave it back to the bride, she hung it on this window that was open in her bridal suite. She didn’t mind that outside there was a direct drop to the valley below, since the château sits on top of a hill, nor the strong breeze coming from the window, and she went back to doing her makeup. We would be lying if we said that the thought about the dress falling down the cliff didn’t came to mind, however the breeze moved the dress in the most perfect way that gives this photo that extra something. We have yet to photograph a dress that would exceed this moment.

The clouds opened for about 15 minutes with the most gorgeous light above the endless vineyards of this venue. This would have been just a pretty sunset photo, however out of nowhere, the venue’s cat came walking slowly into the frame and made it that much better. He didn’t stop there, actually: He caught a mouse a minute after this photo was taken and ate it at the edge of the vines. He wasn’t bothered and didn’t want to go away, so we just rolled with it and kept shooting.

Photographing bouquet tosses is one of the most unpredictable moments during the wedding day because you never, ever know who is going to catch it or how the moment will unfold. The bride’s grandmother decided to join all the single ladies on the dance floor, and we quietly wished for her to catch the bouquet because we knew it would make for the best moment. Somehow, she did, and when the bride turned around, she couldn’t believe her eyes. It was one of the funniest moments, but also a very meaningful one. This photo was exactly what we wanted to capture.
