30 Rising Star Plan Liebe On Capturing a Client’s Essence
November 11, 2019
This was at the bride's getting ready, the final touch before she got into her dress. I just wanted to catch a gentle moment to put her beauty in a pretty light frame.
The bride reminded me all day long of a woman from paintings in art history. I wanted to make a portrait of her but in connection with her love, and I wanted it timeless, as if it was painted. I worked with a long exposure and let him run back and forth while she stood still. The challenge was to hit exactly the moment that was somehow harmonious.
The grooms were from Israel, where gay marriage is not legal. They decided to elope to Malta. This was the last photo of the day. I had this idea in my head all day and again and again forgot about it. By now it was dark—the light comes from a street lamp. It was totally inspiring to just try it out; I never really work with such lighting situations. The challenge for me was working with the hard light while still conveying intimacy.
Throughout the month of November, our Photo of the Day series will be taken over by each of Rangefinder‘s newly minted 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography in 2019. The 30 honorees are featured in our November issue, and each of their full, 30-photo submissions, reviewed by the competition judges, can be found in our online gallery. Katrin and Marco of Plan Liebe would call their collective photographic and filmmaking style as romantic, peaceful and melancholy. With Katrin shooting stills and Marco filming motion, they try to remain observant in an artistic way.
Inspired by stories, music, movies and people, they keep post-processing minimal while focusing on giving emotions more expression with moody tones. “For us, it is the beauty in the chaos and moments of longing,” they say. “That’s what we’re trying to put into our work. We think it’s about embracing every heartfelt, intimate emotion and thoughtful detail along the way.”
In the gallery above are their behind-the-scenes insights on three of the photos from their submission this year, as explained by Katrin.
