Phase One just announced the new XT-Rodenstock HR Digaron W/SW 90mm f/5.6 for its medium-format XT Camera System, a tiny medium-format field camera system that accepts Phase One’s IQ4 digital backs and a special lineup of XT lenses created by Rodenstock.

The lens, which Phase One says is designed with landscape and architectural photography in mind, promises to deliver excellent sharpness and unbeatable image quality, including a shallow depth-of-field, uniform bokeh across the frame and precise focus control. It also features an aperture range of f/5.6-f/22, uses an electromagnetic shutter (1/1000th of a second to 60 minutes) rated for over 500,000 actuations, has a 72mm front filter thread and uses a five-blade aperture diaphragm. It measures 6.3 inches long, 4.2 inches wide and 3.5 inches in diameter, with a weight of 2.65 pounds.

According to Phase One Product Manager Drew Altdoerffer (who discusses the new lens for the XT system in the video below), the idea behind the new 90mm lens is “to bring the large-format feel to digital medium-format photography in a new and unprecedented way. When it comes to a large-format aesthetic, this is the focal length artists have in mind and a longer focal length is a welcome addition to the XT.”

One of the standout features of the XT-HR Digaron-W 90mm f/5.6 that’s touted by Phase One is its 120mm image circle, which apparently is large enough to account for the 24mm of shift the XT Camera System offers on both the X and Y axes for correcting perspective distortion.

The new lens is the fifth (and second to last one) that’s come out so far for the $57,000 XT system. The first four lenses were wider and included the XT Rodenstock HR Digaron-S 23mm f/5.6, the XT Rodenstock HR Digaron-W 32mm f/4, the XT Rodenstock HR Digaron-W 50mm f/4, and the XT Rodenstock HR Digaron-W 70mm f/5.6.

The final lens that comes after this latest one will round out the system with a “telephoto option that will be longer than 100mm,” the company reports. Specs on that lens, as well as a release date, have not yet been announced.

The new XT Rodenstock HR Digaron W/SW 90mm f/5.6 lens is available for order now, with a manufacturer-suggested retail price of just under $13,000. The XT IQ4 150MP Camera System is available for $57,000. For more information, visit the Phase One website.
