The Back To School Issue

It’s September, which means that it is time for kids to head back to school, and for photographers to start thinking about senior portrait opportunities. We are thrilled to feature this striking high school senior image by Cheryl Walsh on the cover of our Back to School issue, jam-packed with tips and advice from several senior portrait photographers, including Walsh, who runs Alternative High School Senior Photography out of Orange County, California. Our other highlighted senior portrait shooters include Claire Anderson of South Florida; True Moua of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Misti Davis of Dallas, Texas.

You may be familiar with our cover shooter from her WPPI award-winning underwater portraiture. So what’s the key to her success?

“I’m not interested in taking just a single photo,” Walsh says. “I’m interested in capturing their story that they share with me.” For the senior football player featured on this month’s Rf cover, she says, “I wanted to capture the intensity in his eyes showing his dedication and focus… the numbers on his jersey were important to him and I liked the word ‘pride’ right above his eyes.”

PLUS! This month’s issue also focuses on the opportunities for photographers to enter the high school sports arena: shooting in school stadiums, starting out with school sports but gaining the potential to move up with the pros and getting your business further established with the help of the Professional School & Sports Photographers International (PSPI).
