WPPI 2018: Epson Shows Off Double-Sided Media and DIY Album Concept

Epson used WPPI 2018 to tease new products planned for later this year. Specifically, Epson is readying the launch of a line of double-sided photo paper.

According to Epson, the papers will be instant-dry with no bleed onto the other side. Double-sided media will be sold in luster, glossy and metallic finishes in cut sheets sizes including 8.5 x 11, 12 x 12, 11 x 14 and 13 x 19. Other sizes may also be made, depending on market demand.

With borderless printing available on a number of Epson SureColor printers, the company also used WPPI to sound photographers out on what Epson is calling their Photo Album Concept.

The concept is essentially a product bundle that would enable users to build their own photo albums using Epson’s double-sided paper, an Epson printer, the Accel Flex binding system and Pixellu SmartAlbums software. The Pixellu software could be used to design an album which is then output as a PDF. Epson’s photo printers that would work with double sided media don’t support duplex printing, but PDFs support printing every odd or even page, which lets users print out one half the album, turn the double sided media over and print the remaining pages and have them ordered properly.

As of now, the Photo Album Concept remains in the conceptual phase but the company will release more information about it after it’s solicited feedback from photographers. (So, if you feel strongly about this, hit Epson up!)
