With the launch of its Luminar software on Windows and Luminar 2018 for Macs, the formerly Mac-only developer Macphun is rebranding itself as Skylum.

It’s also courting disgruntled Lightroom users with plans to add a digital asset manager (DAM) to its Luminar editing program in 2018. The DAM will be available as a free update for Luminar 2018 owners sometime in 2018 (a preview of the DAM UI is in the gallery above). It will offer the ability to sort, rate, organize and back up their digital archive locally and in the cloud.

Beyond the asset manager, Luminar 2018 is packed with a number of new features. According to Skylum, the RAW processor and non-destructive image editor has been rebuilt “from the ground up” to be faster and more responsive. It’s 200 percent faster when opening RAW images than the previous version.

Additional new features include:

• a Transform tool to fix perspective problems
• lens profiles to fix optical distortions
• new Brilliance filter
• new dodge-and-burn capability to selectively target portions of an image
• enhancements to filters such as micro-structure
• real-time noise removal
• Sun Rays filter that places an artificial sun in the frame with adjustable sun rays beaming out from it
• look-up tables (LUTs) to colorize still images
• the ability to convert custom Lightroom presets into Luminar LUTs with a free third-party app

While Luminar is available for Macs and PCs, not every feature will initially be available on the PC build. Workspaces, Clone & Stamp, blend modes for layers, luminosity masking and the flip and rotate tool, among others, will initially only be available on the Mac version. Skylum will provide them to Windows users as a free update later this year, the company said.

Luminar works as a standalone program and can accept Photoshop and Lightroom plugins. It also works as a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom. It costs $59.
