There’s another image-editing app for the iPad now on the market, but before you roll your eyes or shake your head, check out Affinity Photo for iPad. It was released earlier this summer, has just been updated and Serif, the company behind this software, has made its introductory price of $20 permanent. If you haven’t heard about the cross-platform Affinity Photo desktop software, do a little research (and read our review) and you’ll see why we paid attention when the company announced its companion iPad app. Of all the applications that could possibly be a replacement for Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo may come the closest in user interface and tools at an affordable, non-subscription price.

It only makes sense to take the software mobile, although you’ll need a newer mobile device. It’s compatible with the iPad Pro 9.7-, 10.5- and 12.9-inch devices, the iPad Air 2 and iPad 2017. It’s also optimized for Apple Pencil.

The iPad app has almost all the same features as its desktop counterpart but is optimized for iPads with a multitouch UI and full iCloud drive integration. You’ll also find a long list of retouching tools, non-destructive editing and selection tools. Of course, there’s RAW editing, multiple color spaces and file support (including PSD).Updates include the ability to play back macros created and saved in the desktop version (the company promises that the ability to record macros on the iPad will come in a future update). Other new features include faster performance, UI enhancements, improved PDF and vector export and better integration with the Apple Photos app.

And that’s just scratching the surface of updates. Considering the power behind this app and it’s extensive toolset, we believe it’s $20 well spent.
