RIP: Bowens Is Going Out of Business

July 20, 2017

By Greg Scoblete

The decades-old British lighting brand Bowens is going out of business.

In a statement provided to Rangefinder, the company’s owner, AURELIUS Group, confirmed the move originally reported by DIY Photography.

AURELIUS said the decision was due to the “the far-reaching changes affecting its market, including new, considerably less expensive products by Chinese manufacturers, product innovations by competitors, and the changed buying behavior of professional photographers, who are now only willing to invest in new equipment if the investment guarantees additional income.”

AURELIUS scooped up Bowens in 2016 along with Calumet and, in 2017, British photo retailer Wex Photographic. The investment group is now focusing its energies on growing its retail operations in Europe. Calumet will service Bowens products going forward, though it is unclear for now whether those service arrangements pertain to Bowens’ equipment owners in Europe or globally. In the U.S., Bowens was distributed by Manfrotto. (We have asked AURELIUS and Manfrotto for clarification and will update this story when we learn more.)

Update:
According to Calumet CEO Christof Bergmann the company is working on shoring up service for Bowens products beyond Europe and does not have details as of yet.
