A Hat Trick of Softboxes: Fotodiox Releases Next Gen Softboxes

Yes, you may have all the softboxes you think you need and we’re sure that you have at least a couple of “go to” light modifiers. But maybe it’s time to change things up and try something new.

Fotodiox recently released a trio of Next Gen softboxes that should catch your eye, even if you’re not in the market for new gear (but, seriously, aren’t we always in the market for new stuff?).

First up is the Deep EZ-Pro. Because of the softbox’s depth, it’s easy to focus a light source—whether it’s a strobe or continuous light. A silver reflective interior is complemented by two diffusion panels, both of which attach/detach via Velcro.

Although it has rods to support its shape, the Deep EZ-Pro is highly portable and takes seconds to set up or collapse. And, it comes with its own carry bag.

The Deep EX-Pro is available in 28, 36 and 48-inch models with a choice of 15 different speed ring mounts. And the softboxes are reasonably priced at $70/$85/$100, respectively.

Next is the Fotodiox Lantern Softbox (yes, its design is based on traditional Chinese lanterns). The combination of shape and translucent white fabric makes this softbox ideal for times when you want a soft, omnidirectional light with no shadows. Multiple lanterns are recommended for larger spaces but a one-light setup works well in small spaces or as an accent light. The interior features a partial silver reflective surface and it’s bundled with diffusion panels.

It’s collapsible and utilizes interchangeable speed ring inserts. Available in 20, 26 and 32-inch models, the Lantern Softbox is also reasonably priced between $70-$135 depending on size and mount.

The last in the trio is the larger-than-life 80-inch Parabolic Softbox. Measuring almost 7-feet across, the Parabolic Softbox is perfect for photographing groups, fashion and more thanks to its uniform light dispersion. Designed with features to control light spill and intensity, you can easily make the adjustments needed to get the look you want. Dual diffusion panels are bundled with the softbox, too.

While it’s not as portable as the other two models, the Parabolic is collapsible and comes with a carry/storage case. It’s made from all-metal parts and a set of brackets to help eliminate stress when this beast is mounted on a light stand.

The Parabolic, priced at $400, is compatible with Bowens-style speed ring mounts including Westcott, Interfit and Photoflex, among others.

All of these soft boxes come with a 24-month warranty and are compatible with strobe and continuous light sources.

The Parabolic is probably best kept in the studio if only because of its size, but wedding photographers and others will find the portability and quick/easy setup and break down of the Deep EZ-Pro and the Lantern softboxes practical solutions when working on location.
