Nikon’s Z 17-28mm f/2.8: A Wide Zoom Range

Nikon Z-mount shooters on a budget have a new option to shoot wide angles at bright apertures. The Nikkor Z 17-28mm f/2.8, announced this week, mixes a wide f/2.8 maximum aperture with a versatile wide zoom range and a lightweight profile. While Z-mount shooters weren’t without ultra-wide angle options, the new lens comes in at roughly half the cost of the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S.

Nikon’s Z 17-28mm f/2.8 lens is designed to mix value and portability. The lens is about 4 inches long and weighs just under a pound. That not only makes the lens 30 percent lighter than the 14-24mm f/2.8 S, but it’s still lighter than the narrower aperture Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4.

The lens uses an internal zoom, which means the length of the lens doesn’t change as the focal length does. Designed with a dust and moisture-sealed exterior, the lens houses 13 lens elements in 11 groups. The design includes ED Glass, Super ED Glass, aspherical elements and a nine-blade aperture.

The lens is equipped with a stepping motor. Nikon says that motor allows for faster focusing, as well as quieter performance for video shooters.

While the lens offers a more affordable alternative to the 14-24mm without sacrificing the wide f/2.8 aperture, it’s not part of Nikon’s S-line. The S-Line uses the company’s most high-end optics; the pricier 14-24mm is still going to hold appeal for the most demanding shooters. Nikon says the 17-28mm lens is also designed to pair with the Nikkor Z 28-75mm f/2.8, another lens that finds middle ground between the expense of the S-series and the affordability of an f/4 zoom.

Nikon says its Nikkor Z 17-28mm f/2.8 will be available at the end of October for a list price of just about $1,200.
