Leica has refreshed the classic 35mm f/1.4 M mount lens—and it comes with a new aperture blade design for improved bokeh. Leica’s new Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 APSH, announced on September 15, updates the aperture blades and improves the minimum focusing distance with a barely perceptible change in the size of the lens itself.

The new Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 APSH joins the company’s longstanding line of M-mount lenses, metal lenses characterized by an all-manual design with both manual focus and a manual aperture ring. The earlier version of the lens used 9 aperture blades, but the update changes it to 11. Leica says that creates “visibly improved bokeh.” Because the blades create the shape of the aperture, more blades typically creates more rounded out-of-focus points of light.

While bokeh will have a rounder shape, a wider range of possible focus distances will also help Leica photographers create more background and foreground blur. The new optic can focus as close as 15.74 inches (40 cm.) from the front of the lens. That’s an improvement over the previous 27.56 inches (70 cm.) Besides allowing the lens to get closer to the subject, moving in closer increases the depth of field which in turn creates more blur in the background and foreground.

Because the focus range is much wider, Leica has also increased the rotation angle of the ring on the manual focus lens. That allows for more fine-tune focus adjustments, the company says.

While the lens adds a few features to a classic prime, the size is similar to the previous optic. Leica says that the new Summilux-M 25mm f/1.4 is two millimeters shorter, but gets wider by that same amount. The lens hood is also now integrated into the lens, ready to slide out when needed.

Leica’s New Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 APSH comes in two classic finishes: black and silver. The first retails for $5,395 (in black) while the latter sells for $5,595 (in silver).
