The 70-200mm lens is a pivotal focal length and Canon is updating a pair of its 70-200mm workhorses to improve image quality and image stabilization.

Here’s what’s new:

EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM
The new Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM (pictured above) delivers up to five stops of image stabilization, up from its predecessor’s three stops. There are now three IS modes to tailor image stabilization to different shooting scenarios. Canon says you can expect the lens to be quieter when IS is working as well.

The lens’ minimum focusing distance has been shortened from 1.2m to 1m and there are nine circular aperture blades to bring the bokeh. There’s Super Spectra Coating to minimize flare and ghosting and Fluorine coating on front and rear elements to make the lens easier to clean.

The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II ships later this month for $1,299.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM
The new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM has been updated with Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology to reduce flare and ghosting and suppresses light reflection. You’ll enjoy up to 3.5 stops of image stabilization on the new f/2.8 model as well as a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m.

The lens uses Fluorine coating on the front and rear elements and an inner focusing system. It has eight circular aperture blades.

The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III will ship in August for $2,099.
