Canon has expanded its R-series line with the introduction of two APS-C mirrorless cameras: the 32-megapixel EOS R7 and the 24-megapixel EOS R10. Unlike the smaller, entry level APS-C M-series like the M-50 Mark II, Canon’s R7 and R10 cameras are compatible with Canon’s full-frame RF lenses (albeit with a 1.6x crop) as well as the two just announced RF-S lenses. An optional mount adapter can be used for Canon EF and EF-S lenses as well.

Both cameras feature Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF with options for people, animals and vehicles subject detection/tracking. The R7 and the R10 can capture up to 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and deliver up to 7.0 stops of image stabilization (lens-based only for the R10) and both can capture 4K video. The R10 is smaller and lighter, measuring 4.83 x 3.46 x 3.28 and weighing 13.48 ounces (body only). With its built in flash, single SD card slot and $980 price point (body only), the R10 is better suited for enthusiasts and consumers who want to step up to a mirrorless camera from a DSLR or the entry level M-series line.

Of the two, the $1,499 (body only) EOS R7 offers more pro-level still and video features and may hold especially strong appeal to EOS R5 and EOS R6 users who want the extra reach of a cropped sensor and/or a back-up to their higher end camera(s). Some of the stand-out features of the R7 versus the R10 include built-in image stabilization up to 7.0 stops. Faster still image capture at up to a whopping 30 frames per second with the electronic shutter (compared with the R10’s approximate 23fps using the electronic shutter but only with certain lenses). With the EOS R7 you’ll also get dual SD card slots and a dust and moisture resistant body. Given these upgraded features, it’s no surprise that the EOS R7 is slightly larger and heavier than its R10 sibling at 5.20 x 3.56 x 3.61 inches and weighing 18.70 ounces (body only).

At the same time, Canon announced two new RF-S lenses designed for the new APS-C mirrorless line. The RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens will be available for $479 and the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens will retail for about $300. Both lenses will be available in kits with either the R7 or the R10.

Canon’s RF-series, full-frame lenses will mount on the new cameras without an adapter but deliver a 1.6x crop with the R7 and R10’s APS-C sensors. We’ll have to wait and see if—or when—Canon expands the RF-S lens line with higher end glass. But because RF and RF-S lenses are interchangeable, most of your shooting needs will be covered but the current RF line.

Canon’s R7 and R10 cameras and lenses are slated to be available by late 2022.

Prices:
EOS R10: $980 (body only); $1,099 (with RF-S 18-45mm); $1,379 (with RF-S 18-150mm)

EOS R7: $1,499 (body only); $1,899 (with RF-S 18-150mm)
