Forget a summer sequel, Ricoh is ready to ship the follow-up to its K-1 full frame DSLR in March.

The Pentax K-1 Mark II features the same 36-megapixel full-frame sensor with no Anti-aliasing (AA) filter. The sensor now features a new accelerator unit that works with the updated PRIME IV image processor to deliver produce high-resolution images with minimal noise up to ISO 819,200, according to Pentax. The camera boasts updated image processing parameters, particularly green and blue, to produce truer-to-life colors.

The Mark II also marks the debut of an updated Pixel Shift Resolution System, a sensor-shifting, multi-shot mode that lets users shoot higher resolution images with less noise. The new system captures RGB color data for each pixel, which Pentax says results in images with significantly finer details and truer colors than those produced by typical full-frame sensors. There’s also a new Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution mode, which will let you shoot these images without a tripod (though Ricoh cautions it won’t always result in a clean capture).

Like its predecessor, the K-1 Mark II is weather-sealed and dustproof with a unique, tiltable 3.2-inch LCD display. It has a 5-axis internal image stabilization system good for up to five stops of correction, per CIPA standards. Also unchanged are its video specs: the K-1 Mark II records full HD video at 30p with a stereo mic input and headphone jack.

The autofocusing system features 33 points, including 25 cross-type points in the center of the frame. Burst speeds clock in at 4.4 fps for up to 17 RAW images or 70 JPEGs. Switch to an APS-C crop and you can hit speeds of 6.4 fps for up to 50 RAW images or 100 JPEGs.

Dual card slots and built-in GPS round out the camera’s feature set.

The PENTAX K-1 Mark II ships in March for $2,000 or for $2,400 with the HD PENTAX-D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR zoom lens. Existing K-1 owners can ship their camera into Ricoh to have it updated to the Mark II’s features for $550. The upgrade offer will run from May through September of this year.
