Nikon’s Newest DSLR Keeps It Simple

Meet the Nikon D3400, the company’s newest budget-friendly DX format (APS-C) DSLR.

The camera features a 24-megapixel CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter and a native ISO range of 100-25,600. It can hit up to 5 fps in continuous shooting and records full HD videos up to 60p.

The D3400 leverages updated Nikon SnapBridge technology for wireless image transfers to mobile devices. SnapBridge uses Bluetooth Low Energy to send low-res JPEGs to a mobile device and will instantly pair with recognized devices once the camera is turned on.

Rounding out the D3400’s  specs:

•  11-point AF system with focusing at down to -1 EV
•  battery life of 1,200 shots per charge (CIPA)
• 12-bit RAW shooting
• 3-inch display
• a single SD card slot
• 1/4000 sec. shutter speed
• a guide mode to explain camera settings

There are also four new DX format lenses in the Nikon portfolio.

The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR ($250) and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ($200) share identical features except for the former’s vibration reduction (VR) technology, which is good for up to four stops of image stabilization. Unlike older models, there’s no dedicated VR button on the lens. Instead, VR can be set in the camera’s menu. According to Nikon, both lenses will offer improved AF performance in live view mode.

Similarly, Nikon will offer a pair of AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lenses, one with and another without VR. The vibration reduction is good for up to four stops of correction, per CIPA standards. The VR version of the 70-300mm will set you back $400 while the standard version will sell for $350.

The D3400 will ship in September and be bundled with the VR edition of the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm lens for $650 and is available for pre-order now. Nikon will also sell the D3400 bundled with the 18-55mm VR lens and the 70-300mm (sans VR) for $1,000.
