Fujifilm’s New XF10 Compact Is Instagram-Friendly

Camera manufacturers may not like the fact that smartphones have taken a bite out of their sales, but they’re not taking it lying down.

Fujifilm’s latest advanced compact camera is an excellent example. The XF10 features a new Square shooting mode that puts the camera into an Instagram-friendly 1:1 aspect ratio simply by flicking your finger up the 3-inch touch screen. And thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy, the camera automatically sends images to your smartphone as you snap them, so you can populate your social media feed with images from a real camera.

Beyond its social media savvy, the XF10 features 24-megapixel APS-C-sized image sensor in a budget-friendly body. Unlike many camera makers who target large-sensor compacts at the $1,000 price range, Fujifilm is bringing the new XF10 to market at $500.

You’ll enjoy a native ISO range of 200-12,800 (expandable from 100-51,200). The XF10 has a built-in 18.5mm f/2.8 lens (equivalent to a 28mm lens) with a digital zoom function to push the equivalent focal length to 35mm and 50mm.

The XF10 also features a new Snapshot function which will set the focus and aperture to 2m and f/8 or 5m and f/5.6. Fuji has also taken a page from Panasonic with a 4K burst shooting function where the camera records a one second clip (15 frames) of 4K video so you can isolate an 8-megapixel still image.

The XF10 offers 11 film simulation modes and 19 advanced filters, including two new filters. The “Rich & Fine” filter provides brighter and more vivid color at the center of the image, and a slight shadow at the corners. The new Monochrome [NIR] filter simulates a monochrome effect as taken by near-infrared cameras.

Additional features include:
* 4K/15p recording (3840 x 2160)
* Full HD/60p video recording
* 3.9-inch minimum focusing distance
* 6fps continuous shooting for up to 13 JPEGs
* face and eye detect autofocusing
* 1/4000 sec. mechanical shutter; 1/16000 electronic shutter
* built-in flash
* 330 shot battery life.

The XF10 ships in August for $500. It is available for pre-order now.
