Canon has officially announced its newest full frame workhorse: the 5D Mark IV.

The Mark IV delivers a few main upgrades from its predecessor. The first is a new, higher-resolution sensor: it’s a 30.4-megapixel CMOS chip with a native ISO range of 100-32,000 (expandable to 50-102,400).

Another big upgrade comes on the video front. You’ll be able to record 4K video at 4096 x 2160 at either 30p or 24p in camera with an option to pull 8-megapixel stills from your 4K video files during playback. The 5D Mark IV also supports Full HD recording at up to 60p and 1280 x 720 video recording at up to 120p.

The AF system has been updated with Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology for improved AF during video recording and live view. The Mark IV has 61 AF points (all effective at f/8 and all user-selectable) including 41 cross points. The camera can focus in low light down to -3EV when using the viewfinder or -4 EV in live view.

The camera’s 3.2-inch display is now fully touch, including AF point selection.

If you’re interested in coaxing more detail from the camera, a new Dual Pixel RAW mode lets you shoot RAW files that are two times the size of a standard 5D Mark IV file. The files must be processed using Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software and Canon says the Dual Pixel RAW mode is good for enhancing images taken at wide apertures.

Additional features include:

  •  up to 7 fps continuous shooting with AF fixed on first frame up to 170 RAW images or 820 large JPEGs
  • a new 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with flicker detection
  • built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS
  • dual memory card slot: SD and CompactFlash
  • 1/8000 sec. shutter speed; 1/200 flash sync speed
  • 900 shots per charge per CIPA
  • USB 3.0

The 5D Mark IV will ship in September for $3,499. It is available for pre-order now.

(Oh, and in the event you were wondering, the 5D Mark IV delivered on three of the four things we were hoping the new camera would bring. The only one missing? A 10 fps burst mode.)

Canon is also introducing two EF-Series L-series lenses.
