Ever wondered whether tough-looking heavy metal fans have a soft side to them? They do and it’s on full display in the hilarious and tender portraits of metalheads and their beloved cats captured by photographer Alexandra Crockett.

Crockett’s forthcoming book, Metal Cats from Powerhouse, debuts on May 6th and includes portraits of an array of metal fans and their feline friends that gives new meaning to the phrase “pussy riot.”

Crockett photographed 115 metalheads with their cats in their homes during trips up and down the West Coast between 2010 and 2012. While the resulting portraits are revealing and cute, getting the right shot was not easy.

“It was crazy,” Crockett told Slate. “It wasn’t organized, it was out of control and it was just full on movement. Most of the images used for the book are at a place when the cat has a split second of just looking at the light or looking at my camera like ‘What is that?’ and I have to snap it at that exact second.”
