When Slovenia-based photographers Katja & Simon were asked to be part of a DIY wedding at Pinezici Beach on the Island of Krk in Croatia, they were beyond thrilled to be part of a wedding in a breathtaking but relatively unknown location. “Croatia has just recently been discovered as a destination wedding location, but most of the weddings still happen in Dubrovnik,” says Katja. “This spot was a real treat to shoot in.”

The island is a second home to bride Nina, who had been dreaming about having a beach wedding there even before she met her husband, Matej. “After they met and spent two summers on the island, Matej took her to the most beautiful beach and got down on one knee,” Katja says, “and without any hesitation, she said yes.” After that, the bride and groom did everything themselves, without a planner. “Matej took care of the location, DJ and built the altar (from recycled wood), while the stationery, decoration and flowers were handled by Nina.”

Katja describes how the bride’s dress wasn’t a “typical” white wedding dress but instead a simple light dress from Terrani Couture that “danced in the wind and had a sparkling upper part to make the whole outfit a little bit more glamorous and fun. The groom’s neck tattoo was meant more as a joke, but we think it was the perfect accessory to his elegant navy suit.”

Most of the couple’s friends and family came to the island one or two days before the wedding, mainly to hang out and help with the final preparations. “The guys took care of the altar and the setting on the beach, while the girls helped with decoration,” Katja says. “The wedding party gathered in front of their summer house where the groom had to sing to get the bride to join everybody on the terrace. Then they drove to the beach in a Cabriolet with all the guests walking behind, which was quite fun and special.”

It was an emotional ceremony, accompanied with “sun on one side and a dark storm coming from the other side of the sky,” Katja recalls. “After the ceremony and Champagne, we took an old fishing boat and headed to the storm to do some spectacular shots.”
