Portrait Tip: “Direct, Don’t Pose”

When it comes to compelling portrait photography, maybe we should just ignore Madonna’s advice and listen to Derek Heisler instead.

In this short tutorial, Heisler explains his approach to directing—as opposed to posing—his portrait subjects. It’s a method that requires keeping your subject moving between rest and action poses and can put subjects at much greater ease in front of the camera.
