Smoking Out an Idea

This couple decided to host their post-ceremony festivities at New York’s Norwood, which Brooklyn photographer Chellise Michael describes as a “decadent, private, members-only club that in a very particular manner, grants access only to those that are crucial to contributing to the art scene in NYC,” she says. “So as you could imagine, this four-story brownstone is a wonderland of well-curated art and magical conversations.”

The club had lots to explore, and of the items, the couple was especially taken with a train sculpture mounted on the wall that choo-chooed and let out a cloud of steam every hour. Michael took a photo of the two of them under the train just as the steam bloomed out the top,  “but what happened after that shot ended up being the most liked photo I have ever had on Instagram—ever,” the photographer says.

“I stepped back 5 or 6 feet and saw how the steam was filling the room. I immediately knew what I wanted to do: mood! So in camera, I quickly made all of the adjustments necessary to make the room seem really dark and purposefully positioned them away from the train so it wasn’t in the photo. Then I positioned them to be side-lit from the window light to accentuate the steam in the room. The entire room changed in a matter of seconds just by increasing my shutter spread and adjusting my aperture. Same lens. Same room. Same 5 minutes.”
