Photographers are taught early on about leading lines, but that doesn’t make it a beginners-only tool. Rf 30 Rising Star (2014) Lev Kuperman uses it here in such a way that’s not only aesthetically pleasing, but also clever when it comes to a couple’s first look.

Kuperman didn’t have to look far for this scene. “This wedding was on a particularly cold and wet October day,” he says, “and the couple got ready in a boutique hotel in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It’s very industrial there, and this was directly across the street from the hotel’s front door, at the side of a highway underpass. I saw the lines and the whited-out graffiti, and I thought I could make something interesting in this setting.” The result is something interesting indeed: the couple paired with the unexpected environment tell a story in tandem.
