Inspired By the Light

Most afternoons, Yiqian Barba of Luma Photography takes her two young boys outside to play. That routine, however, has recently been deterred by some cold weather in her home state of South Carolina. So now she and her sons find solace indoors which, the photographer says, has created a brand new and exciting challenge. “I’ve been finding ways to take pictures inside, and finding those pockets of light that stream in during the afternoons has been a fun little project for me.”

Captured in the photographer’s own living room, this portrait of her three-year-old son Will was taken as he peered through the window blinds out onto the patio. “The room was lit only by the warm afternoon sunlight that was filtering in through the blinds. I saw the moment and quickly grabbed my camera,” she explains.

(Captured using a Nikon D5000 and a 35mm lens at f/2.5, 1/160 of a second and ISO 200.)
