This had started out just like any other cake cutting, says photographer Paige Nelson. Everyone had gathered around the newlyweds at the bride’s family home near the outskirts of Los Angeles where the reception took place to witness the tradition, but, Nelson says, “when it came time to feed each other, you can see in the frames leading up to this one that the bride instigated the war!”

Nelson kept her camera focused on the bride and groom but says she didn’t have enough time to adjust her settings to compensate for the action. No big deal, though: “I think the slight motion blur adds to the story,” Nelson notes.
