An Unexpected Snowstorm

Emerald Lake in British Columbia may be a brilliant teal-green at other times of year, but on this day, photographer Darren Roberts and the wedding party was surprised by a snow storm that changed the landscape into a white winter wonderland. “It kept snowing hard the rest of the day to the point that the roads where shut down and everyone got to stranded at Emerald Lake Lodge,” Roberts recalls, “so everyone got to enjoy sleeping in a cabin cozied up next to a fireplace.”

This wasn’t Roberts’ first time shooting a wedding while it was snowing out, so he knew to do a couple of key things with his camera: have red highlights selected for focus peaking rather than white, his usual go-to mode, and switch his Fujifilm X-Pro2 mirrorless camera from autofocus to manual focus. This ensures that he’s not “focusing on some random snowflake,” he says.
