Tech Tuesday: Western Digital My Book External Hard Drives Preview

September 24, 2013

Even if you’re not a photographic hoarder, you know how quickly hard drives can run out of space. Fortunately, as we accumulate more (and larger) files, external hard drive capacities continue to increase while price-per-gigabyte decreases. Western Digital’s new My Book and My Book for Mac external hard drives fit neatly into that trend.

For PC users, My Book is available in 2TB, 3TB and 4TB capacities and utilizes USB 3.0. Equipped with WD SmartWare Pro software, which integrates Dropbox, files can be easily and automatically backed up. The drives also come with the WD Edition of Acronis True Image for a full system backup, and the ability to securely delete digital files and programs.

My Book for Mac is available in 2TB and 3TB capacities and utilizes SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and UAS for faster file transfer. It’s Apple Time Machine compatible for backup, and comes with WD Security software and WD utilities. The latter not only provides a simple way to register drives, but allows users to run diagnostics as well.

Pricing is reasonable at $130 (2TB), $150 (3TB) and $180 (4TB). The drives can be ordered directly from the Western Digital Store or from various retailers. (If you need more storage and faster speed, also check out the company’s 6TB Thunderbolt My Book external drive; it’ll set you back $700, though.)
