Tech Tuesday: Nikon Newsbits from Adobe, PocketWizard and Profoto

August 12, 2014

By Laura Brauer

August is off to a good start for Nikon shooters. Last month, Adobe released Camera Raw 8.6 (Photoshop CS6 and CC) and Lightroom 5.6 with support for the Nikon D810 RAW files (if you’re using Photoshop CS5 or earlier, DNG Converter 8.6 is available, too).

Nikon has also released version 1.0 of its new—and free—Capture NX-D  RAW (.NEF, .NRW) processing software, so you have several options for handling RAW files.

If you haven’t yet ordered your Nikon D810, check out my review in the upcoming October issue of our sister publication, Photo District News. But if you want to place your order before then, check out Nikon’s Switch & Save Promotion. The offer expires September 30, but if you order the D810 and qualifying lenses and/of Speedlights, you can get up to $1,000 in vouchers toward future Nikon purchases. Not as good as a cash rebate, of course, but if you’re going to update your gear, this promo is well worth investigating.

PocketWizard managed a really quick turnaround on its latest TTL firmware update (v. 3.700 for Nikon) and squeezed in the Nikon D810, along with the Nikon D4S and other Nikon cameras. (If you’re a Canon user and happen to be reading this, there’s a firmware update for you, too, at the same link.)

And, finally, Profoto announced that, as of September 15, Nikon TTL metering will be available for the extremely popular Profoto B1 with the release of the Air Remote TTL-N. Want a chance to win a Profoto B1 and an Air Remote TTL-N? Click here before August 25 to enter the contest. It’s not one of those random drawings; you need to submit an idea for a creative shoot with the gear.
