Hahnemühle USA is a subsidiary of Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH, which began making paper in 1584, and entered the fine art inkjet paper market in 1995. The brand has a reputation for “quality, consistency and variety,” says sales manager Bob Haupt, and it all starts with what he calls “the water story.”

It goes like this: Water for the German company’s paper mill comes from a very pure source. Because the company doesn’t need to chemically purify the water, the fibers of the paper don’t have chemical contaminants and there’s space to put as much coating as it can absorb. “The coating is what really determines the quality,” Haupt says.

And because Hahnemühle controls every aspect of production—its coatings are proprietary, too—Haupt says the quality is consistent. “When a printmaker is doing an edition of 50 prints and uses one roll for the first 10 prints and grabs the next roll, same batch or not, he’s going to get the same results,” he says.

And finally, there’s the variety. The company sells two inkjet-printable canvases and a broad range of 24 grades of paper, which vary in base color, weight and texture. Its Photo Rag line, which is 100 percent cotton, is a top seller and comes in a variety of options, including papers with a pearl finish, satin finish or in bright white.
